NASA
Recognizes Sun Protection Clothing Leader
(Fair Oaks, CA) ---Solar
Protective Factory (SPF®) March 29, 2010
The company
responsible for launching the sun protective clothing industry twenty years ago is
being lauded in NASA’s 50th Anniversary publication, Spinoff. Spinoff is an annual publication from
NASA highlighting the past years significant achievements utilizing space
program technologies in ways beneficial to the planet and its inhabitants.
Only
a few of the elite group of companies who have made significant contributions
to and from space technologies are featured in this Golden Anniversary issue of
Spinoff.
“In 1989 we
discovered that many fabrics do not offer adequate protection from the sun’s
ultraviolet rays when be began testing fabrics. When we formed our company twenty years ago (in 1990) there
were no standards for sun protective fabrics and apparel. We worked with the FDA, FTC,
CPSC, ASTM and AATCC for more than five years to develop our U.S. standards for
sun protective apparel and fabrics.
The U.S. standards are the most stringent in the world yet there are
many companies selling in the U.S. who only use Australian standards or who simply
proclaim their products are ultraviolet protective,” said Terry Breese,
President and co-founder of the Solar Protective Factory.
“When NASA contacted
us in the early nineties they requested the full range of our fabrics for their
testing. We didn’t initially know
why NASA would be testing our fabrics at their White Sands New Mexico
facilities.”
Breese’ company was
soon made aware that NASA was looking for the lightest weight fabric that
blocked more than 99% of ultraviolet ray (A and B) and still be comfortably
worn on a sunny day.
“Fabrics
and apparel products developed and produced by the Solar Protective Factory
have dye lots tested and certified by an independent testing laboratory
www.uvtesting.org. We also
follow U.S. governmental guidelines on truth in labeling and advertising by having
full disclosure of our product contents and point of origin,” said Terry Breese
President of the Solar Protective Factory. The
Solar Protective Factory is celebrating its 20th year in business
this year. A full line of
certified UV protective apparel products and accessories are available at www.spfstore.com along with UV protective fabrics at www.spffabrics.com .
