SUNSCREEN SCANDAL
A lawsuit filed in 2006 challenges major sunscreen makers
claims of their effectiveness in blocking ultraviolet rays as well
as the prevention of skin diseases like skin cancer.
Major sunscreen brands are marketed as sunblocks but often
create a false sense of security that can cause users to stay in the
sun too long, thus endangering their health the suit charges.
“Parents, especially, have been defrauded into believing the
false labeling and advertising claims of these products. They
have sent their children to play or swim in the sun, believing
that slathering them with one of these products specifically
marketed for children provides protection, when it does not,”
said Mitchell Twersky, a New York attorney. “And the guys
who are marketing these products know their claims are false,”
he added.
